In Mar del Plata, Argentina, we can catch 5 different sharks species: sandtiger shark, escalandrun, tigerfish, hope shark and hammerheads, it depends of the time of the year.

From late August to November we can catch  the surprising hope shark. Weighing from 5 to 20 Kg fairy light tackles are used. Bottomfishing or a half way depth, we use live bait of mackerel or calamari.

The broadnose sevengill  or shark can be caught during the whole year, but the best months are September and October.

The hammerhead shark in this area is rather small, like the hope shark, and can be caught from December till May. Frequently we can see it swiming on the surface, and it´s often caught while we are trying to fish the bacota. Among the sharks inhabiting the coastal waters in Argentina, the so called sandtiger shark and the ecalandrún stand out.

SANDTIGER SHARK

One of the greatest fighting game fishes in our sea for it´s strength and weight, up to 180Kg. Arrives to Mar del Plata ´s sea in late November and stays till May.February, March  and April are the months of best catch. Starting from the port of Mar del Plata, we can divide this zone in 2 parts, North in Santa Clara del Mar during December and January and South in Punta Mogotes lighthouse and Pescadores Bank from February till May.Strong tackles must be used. Fishing rods of 40 and 70 lb. The best reels are Penn Senador 6/0 and 9/0 using 80 or 90 mm. nylon. If we want something even better we must choose Penn International 30T, 30TW, 50T and 50TW, Shimano Tiagra Ti50W and Dawa 800H. Lines must have a special structure for the purpose.

We use hooks 12/0 and 14/0 .The best baits are calamari and mackerel , but we have also used sometimes stripes mullets, bluefishes and pompanos. Once we are anchored in the sea, to enhance our fishing opportunities , we will release 3 lines, at 150, 100 and 60 mts.

ESCALANDRUN

It´s shape, fishing and feeding is completely different than the bacota. It can overcome 180Kg, it´s brown colour with dark spots all over it´s body.We can find it in the same places as the bacota, but using deep sea fishing. The best baits are red porgyes, pompanos, bluefishes and sometimes striped mullets. Live baits that we usualy catch in the same place. We use steels with the lines between 2 and 3mts.The hooks can be of 10/0 12/0 and 14/0.

Once he catches  our bait he will keep it in his mouth while he goes away 10 or 20mts, then he stops and starts chewing it but without swallowing in distrust. He will do this movement 3 or 4 times before he swallows. We must be very careful here, if we are too fast, he will release  the bait and we will lose him. If we are too slow, the hook will stick in his stomach and will produce him a hard pain making him unable to struggle.
